Introduction

We use equipment in canine fitness to improve biomechanical precision and neuromuscular recruitment. Appropriately selected tools help refine postural alignment, enhance weight distribution awareness, and facilitate activation of underactive or inhibited muscle groups.

Equipment is not introduced to increase difficulty for its own sake. Its purpose is to provide clear proprioceptive input, support accurate motor patterning, and develop strength through structured, progressive loading.

Recommended Equipment

1 Stable Platform

A stable, appropriately sized platform is foundational in structured canine fitness training because it establishes clear spatial boundaries that promote proper alignment across a wide range of exercises.

The platform should be long enough to support the dog’s full body in a down and narrow enough to encourage symmetrical limb placement.

For detailed sizing guidelines, please refer to: Platforms for Canine Fitness

2 Stable Feet Targets

You will need:

  • 1 Target for both front feet

  • 1 Target for both rear feet

Feet targets enhance limb awareness and establish clear spatial boundaries for desired foot alignment. They create defined placement zones that encourage symmetrical stance, appropriate weight distribution, and consistent postural mechanics.

Beginners may benefit from starting with Large Feet Targets, which provide greater surface area and increase the likelihood of early success while reinforcing correct motor patterns.

The goal is to progress to Standard Feet Targets, which demand more precise limb placement and refined neuromuscular control.

Practicing with individual foot targets can also serve as an effective prerequisite before introducing paw pods, as it develops the limb independence, proprioceptive awareness, and positional accuracy required for successful pod work.

For detailed sizing guidelines, please refer to: Feet Targets for Canine Fitness

4 Paw Pods

Paw pods are inflatable half-domes used for individual foot placement.

The convex surface encourages:

  • Digital flexor engagement

  • Carpal stabilizer activation

  • Intrinsic paw muscle recruitment

  • Proprioceptive input through the distal limb

This is particularly beneficial for dogs with structural presentations such as chondrodysplasia.

Recommended Brands (Smallest to Largest)

  1. Flexiness Paw Stackers
  2. Totofit Smooth shown*
  3. Totofit Nubby
  4. Bosu Balance Pods

I strongly recommend avoiding oversized, excessively spiky, or slippery alternatives.
