Find 4 Feet: Paw Targeting Course

Build coordination, body awareness, and movement confidence through structured paw target training.

Developed by Sarah Keller, multi-certified canine fitness trainer and founder of Sit Stay Squat.

The Find 4 Feet course teaches dogs how to intentionally control and place each paw through progressive, step-by-step targeting exercises. Beginning with foundational paw targeting skills and advancing to individual limb lifting exercises, this course develops coordination, stability, and confidence in movement.

Suitable for beginners and advanced canine conditioners alike, this course focuses on breaking complex skills into small, achievable steps that set dogs up for success.

Why Paw Targeting Matters

Paw targeting skills are one of the most effective ways to build limb awareness, coordination, and neuromuscular control in dogs.

By teaching dogs how to intentionally move their limbs, we can improve:

  • Coordination

  • Proprioception

  • Core stability

  • Balance

  • Muscular strength

  • Mobility

  • Movement confidence

These skills form the foundation for more advanced canine fitness training and support lifelong movement confidence.

Find 4 Feet Course Progression

This program is divided into four sections, with each section building on the previous skills.

Section 1: Feet Targeting
Dog Target Training

Dogs begin by learning foundational paw targeting skills, including:

  • Front feet targeting

  • Rear feet targeting

  • Ipsilateral feet targeting

We begin by teaching dogs to step forward to the targets, then refine their targeting and fitness skills by introducing backward stepping and sidestepping movements.

These exercises build confidence, coordination, and foundational body awareness while introducing the mechanics needed for more advanced exercises.

Section 2: Foot Targeting

Dog coordination body awareness

In this section, targeting becomes more precise and complex.

Dogs learn:

  • Individual front foot targets (stepping forwards, backwards, and sidestepping)

  • Individual rear foot targets (forward, backward, sidestepping)

  • Single-foot targeting

  • All four feet on four individual targets

These exercises significantly improve limb awareness and full-body coordination while strengthening stabilizing musculature.

After completing Section 2, dogs have the body awareness skills needed to target all four feet onto individual paw pods.

As a bonus, course registration includes FREE access to Paw Pod Precision.

Section 3: Individual Limb Lifts

Dog leg lifts

This section focuses on teaching individual limb lifts using shaping and targeting skills.

Dogs learn:

  • Individual front limb lift into abduction

  • Individual rear limb lift into abduction

  • Individual rear limb lift into extension

  • Rear foot lift to cone

  • Rear foot lift to target stick

  • Mountain climber variations

Individual limb lifts are among the most advanced body awareness skills a dog can learn, requiring coordination, balance, strength, and mobility.

These exercises allow targeted muscular engagement in ways few other exercises can.

Bonus Section 4: Shake a Paw VariationsShake a Paw

This bonus section explores how a familiar trick can become a mobility and stability exercise.

Dogs learn:

  • “Shake” and “Paw” on both sides

  • Limb extension variations

  • Limb abduction variations

  • Limb adduction variations

  • Stand + paw variations

These exercises provide a force-free way to encourage thoracic-limb mobility while reinforcing core stability.
